Honshu Chapter National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA) Scholarship Guidelines I. Introduction: The National Defense Transportation Association (NDTA) will sponsor college scholarships for graduating high school seniors of the class of 2008. The number and amount of scholarships is yet to be determined; however, it is expected that between four (4) and eight (8) scholarships, in amounts of $250 - $1000, will be awarded. Each scholarship will be in the form of a check made payable to the school of attendance. The selection will be based on the criteria listed below and made by the NDTA Scholarship Committee, comprised of military and civilian transportation professionals from various U.S. installations in mainland Japan. Scholarship funds are to be used for tuition, room and board, books, and academic fees at any accredited 2-4 year college or university. If eligible, please complete the application form and return it via email to the address noted below NLT 30 May 2008. The scholarships will be awarded on a date and location TBD.
II. III. Factors considered in selection: a. Scholastic achievement b. Participation in extracurricular activities c. Community service and volunteer work experience d. Awards received e. Evidence of leadership ability f. Composition skills g. Whether a current member, or a child/spouse of a Honshu Chapter NDTA member on 1 Jan 08. IV. Factors NOT considered in selection: a. Race, color, creed, or sex of the applicant b. Rate or rank of sponsor c. School attending d. Financial status
V. The selectee will not be awarded the scholarship under the following conditions: a. The selectee receives a scholarship that covers 100% of room, board, books, tuition, and fees b. The selectee is not accepted by an accredited college or does not attend one to which he or she was accepted in the Year 2008 Fall Term. If the scholarship is not activated by 31 December 2008, the scholarship is automatically canceled. The NDTA Executive Board may consider exceptions if notified in writing.

1. Use MS Word to open and fill in the cover sheet and application. If you do not have the electronic version of the application, please contact Jacob Hill at 225-9466. Ensure the application is completely filled out and the required attachments are included. If a block or question doesn’t apply, put “N/A” in that block or for that question. Applicants are not limited to the space below each question for their response. A continuation sheet or separate enclosure may be used.
2. All information must be typed. Other than signatures, no handwriting allowed. This includes the character references.
3. Attach a copy of your official high school transcript for grades 9-12, as well as any college transcripts.
4. Attach one (1) character reference not written by a family member. Your reference can include, but is not limited to, teachers, advisors, administrators, activity leaders, clergy, family friends, employers, or neighbors. They should be able to knowledgeably comment on academic promise, character, and citizenship with their character reference. Please use the attached form. Again, this must be typed.
5. Students receiving a scholarship must provide the name/address of college/university to NDTA. The scholarship check will be mailed to the school of attendance.
6. The application must be received by 30 May 2008 – please do not wait until the last day to apply. All documents must be emailed (as an attachment) to: Jacob Hill or Honshu Chapter (Documents with signatures should be scanned.) Attachments must be sent as Adobe Acrobat (*.PDF) or MS Word (*.doc) files. Please combine the scholarship cover sheet, application and all required attachments into a single Acrobat or Word file; try to keep the attachment below 5MB.
7. Scholarship winners will be notified via telephone/e-mail as soon as possible after the selection process is complete. A congratulatory letter from the President of the NDTA Honshu Chapter will follow. Students not selected for a scholarship will be notified by letter.
